Taking on the leadership of a major campus group as a sophomore might seem intimidating to some, but Erin Johnson just takes it all in stride.

I just feel like I decided to take on this role and I took it on to the best of my ability,” the Ross BBA student told The Michigan Daily, which recently recognized her as one of its Students of the Year.

Johnson is the president of OptiMize, a University of Michigan group that helps student entrepreneurs “turn their ideas for social change into real world impact.”

The social-impact aspect really appealed to her. “I think it’s just looking at everything you do on a daily basis and trying to figure out the most positive way to do it,” she told the Daily. “So if you want to accomplish something or make something better, how many people’s days can you improve?”

Johnson is pursuing a dual degree in business and international studies. This summer, she plans to take a Ross Global Immersion course in India.
