On May 4, 40 University of Michigan undergraduates, including 23 Ross BBA students, will head to Costa Rica for a three-week course at the INCAE Business School in capital city San Jose.

The trip is part of the Strategy 320 course at Ross that focuses on “Sustainable Business in Latin America.”

While in the Central American country, students will meet Gail Nystrom, director of the Costa Rican Humanitarian Foundation, an organization working with Nicaraguan refugees struggling against poverty in the San Jose neighborhood La Carpio. The students will work with Nystrom on the development of the new La Carpio library and education system to help the refugees get access to books and resources.

To help the students buy books for the La Carpio library, Ann Arbor’s Pizza House will be donating 15 percent of each purchase this Wednesday night and early Thursday morning to the cause.

The book project is just one part of a three-week immersion into the culture of Latin American business practices. As the Strategy 320 course description explains, “visits to factories and local companies, including the Free Trade Zone Co., a coffee plantation, and various ecotourism sites will enable students to see first-hand the practices of Latin American business companies and how these companies are innovative in their efforts to reduce harmful impacts on the environment.” This is the sixth year Strategy 320 has made the trip to Costa Rica.
