New MBAs to Share Action-based Learning Experiences During #RossImpact Challenge

Over the course of the next four days, the incoming class of 450 first-year MBA students will have less than a week to concept, create, and host a back-to-school fair at Detroit’s Eastern Market for Detroit Public School students. It’s part of the annual Impact Challenge, presented by the Ross Leadership Initiative, and the first opportunity for new Ross students to experience Ross’ signature action-based learning environment and mission to develop leaders who make a positive difference in the world.

Tasked with creating products or services that help ready Detroit youth for success in the upcoming school year, the student teams will be evaluated on their ventures’ desirability, feasibility, and viability by a panel of judges.

During the four days, social media will play a role in the challenge and offer the teams another chance to learn about and connect with the students of Detroit. After exploring ten observational research exhibits set up at Ross, teams will have to tweet lessons learned about the needs of Detroit’s students using the tag #RossImpact.

Ross students will also be tweeting quotes and tidbits from a series of keynote addresses that will provide insight and inspiration to the students during the Impact Challenge.

Detroit-area school students will have a major impact on the outcome of the challenge by using special “Ross chips” to purchase services or products from the fair booths on Thursday afternoon. They’ll also be able to affect the outcome with their Instagram accounts. Teams will have to encourage their booth visitors to vote for their booth as a favorite in a competition on @MichiganRoss’ Instagram account during the fair. The team with the most votes on their booth will receive an extra dose of “Ross chips” in their final tally.

The back-to-school fair will take place from 3:00-6:00 pm on Thursday, August 29, at Eastern Market in Detroit. You can learn more about the challenge specifics in our news release.
