Gene Mage

Managing Director, Custom Programs

Since joining Michigan Ross in 2015, Gene has built a growing portfolio of custom clients in North America, Asia, and the Middle East. Gene’s key expertise is helping clients create customized multi-month and multi-year high potential development programs using a wide range of experiential learning approaches. A certified assessor and feedback coach, Gene also helps clients build customized executive assessment protocols.

Before joining the executive education field, Gene was a senior client partner for Kenexa Corporation (aka IBM Smarter Workforce), and a leader in marketing, international business development, and global leadership development with Corning Incorporated. At Corning, Gene launched several major new products, redesigned the go-to-market strategy for Japan, built Corning’s first global leadership development program, and led Corning’s internal consulting team. With Kenexa, Gene led executive assessment and development for North America, working with top organizations such as GSK, American Express, and Ingersoll Rand.

Gene holds a BA in economics and an MBA with honors from Cornell University. He is the author of two books and more than 100 articles on management and leadership. In his free time, Gene enjoys playing bass guitar with a local musical group, studying jazz guitar, and learning Mandarin Chinese. He and his wife Anne have two sons — one is a guitar player in Oakland, California, and the other a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University.
