Alexandra Mills

Class of 2021

As an elementary school teacher in Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, I taught in communities where the main brick-and-mortar businesses were liquor stores, chicken carryout restaurants, and funeral homes. Living in blighted neighborhoods in concentrated poverty inhibited my students' ability to learn, and I knew I wanted to have an impact in the communities my students lived in. After teaching, I served on the Impact Investment team of one of the largest urban real estate developments in the country, Port Covington. I led supplier diversity initiatives to support minority and women-owned businesses and collaborated with the leaders of six disinvested neighborhoods on strategic community revitalization efforts. I saw how investment could mobilize a community and spur economic development, and this experience motivated me to pursue business school to learn how to evaluate investment opportunities and direct investment decisions.
